On the round table in Prague, the ATHENA project, which focuses on accessible tourism, pointed out the necessity to incorporate accessible tourism principles into all fields connected to travelling within the Czech Republic. The project thus ended its two-year long operation and published the first Czech handbook on barrier-free travelling constituting the cornerstone of good examples compendium to inspire Czech managers of tourist facilities. According to the findings of the ATHENA project, there is still a long way to go within the field of promotion and availability of accessible tourism in the Czech Republic.

To find ways in both the Moravian-Silesian Region and in the whole of the Czech Republic to develop accessible tourism was the aim of the round table organized in May by the ATHENA project focused on promotion of accessible tourism. All participants of the round table agreed that the Moravian-Silesian Region has great potential regarding barrier-free tourism. To make use of this potential, however, a joint effort of all tourism stakeholders will be necessary.

The twenty-year-old Jiří Mára is the only Czech who has travelled to almost all continents in his wheelchair. This year's journey across the African countries will complete the Mára family's tour round the world. They are a proof that physical disability is definitely not a handicap for travelling. Last week, they shared their travel experiences as well as advice on travel for people with specific needs with the participants of an ATHENA project workshop in Ostrava focused on the promotion of accessible tourism.

Participants in the international conference “Tourism for All – good examples from home as well as abroad” appeal to politicians and institutions to start viewing accessible tourism as an integral part of tourism as such. The conference held by the project “ATHENA” in cooperation with ENAT (European Network for Accessible Tourism) and financed by EU proved the necessity of improvements of provided services so that Czech destinations were fully accessible and available for all.

The mountains of Šumava have welcomed the ATHENA project specialised in accessible tourism for all. At the workshop in Vimperk, whose major topics included accessible tourism and the role of non-profit organizations in tourism, the participants emphasized in particular the need to adapt tourism services to make them accessible for all. In Šumava, they have found several good examples of successful non-profit organizations focused on accessible tourism.

The ATHENA project has started an action to support accessible tourism in the Czech Republic. The campaign JEDEME TAKY aneb Cestování podle Vás will last until 31 January, 2011, and its major aim is the exchange of experience in accessible tourism solutions.

During the Medical Fair 2009 in Brno, the project managers of ATHENA on travel, a project that focuses on support of accessible toruism, met at the workshop called Barrier-free travelling in practice. The participants at the workshop pointed out the necessity of making tourist facilities accessible to all, as well as the need of promoting accessible tourism before the representatives of public bodies and state administration of the Czech Republic.

Since June of this year, a new project for support of the accessible tourism in the Czech Republic has launched its activities. It is called ATHENA na cestách/ATHENA. The project deals with development of human resources and employment in the Czech Republic and increasing awareness of barrier-free travelling, applying experience and inspiration from EU countries.
